The Avalanche's Stanley Cup banners are strangely absent from the rafters of Pepsi Center as a result of the NHL lockout, but we still have some great hockey going on at the collegiate level here in Colorado. The DU Pioneers are returning to the Frozen Four to defend their NCAA championship -- and this time, they will be joined by their archrivals from Colorado College. DU and CC will face each other in the national semifinal, with the winner to face either Minnesota or North Dakota.
Historically, DU and CC have been warm weather getaway destinations for players from places like Michigan and Manitoba. But nowadays there is a reasonable representation of Colorado kids on the DU roster. In fact, the game winning goal for DU in the regional finals against New Hampshire was scored by Ryan Dingle of Steamboat Springs.
The Frozen Four will take place week after next in Columbus, Ohio.
