President Bush will be in Lakewood to promote Social Security phase-out tomorrow, along with arch-privatizer Rep. Bob Beauprez. Some defenders of Social Security have obtained tickets -- it will be interesting to see if they are allowed inside.
It will also be interesting to see if the local media asks any tough questions of possible gubernatorial candidate Beauprez, who made opposition to privatization part of his 2002 election campaign. Will they allow him to claim that Bush's plan isn't "privatization"? If he claims it isn't, will they ask him what he meant in 2002 when he said he opposed privatization? Chances are he would claim he meant he opposed letting private companies take over investing the assets of the Social Security trust fund -- something no one has ever proposed. And my guess is that the local media will let him get away with that.
